INCI Name: Glyceryl Stearate

CAS Number: 31566-31-1

Description

Glyceryl Stearate is a non-palm, 100% natural grade of glyceryl monostearate. It is a powerful co-emulsifier that can be used in non-ionic, anionic, or cationic O/W emulsions as well as W/O emulsions and surfactant systems. Glyceryl Stearate is a stabilizer that helps to build lamellar structures in emulsions providing consistency and texture to formulations. Glyceryl Stearate is suggested in cosmetics and toiletries and recommended as a co-emulsifier in conjunction with a variety of emulsifiers and surfactants. Glyceryl Stearate is also recommended as a binder in non-aqueous oil and wax systems such as lipsticks and pressed powders. Derived from sustainably sourced coconut oil and olive oil, it is an ideal alternative to typical glyceryl monostearate that is derived from palm oil.

Benefits / Applications

  • Glyceryl Stearate is used as a stabiliser in creams and lotions of the oil-in-water type because it has viscosity-increasing and emulsion-stabilizing properties.
  • It is used In combination with hydrophilic anionic, cationic, amphoteric or nonionic emulsifiers, and finely dispersed, stable O/W emulsions are obtained.
  • In contrast to self-emulsifying Glyceryl Stearate SE, it possesses only weak emulsifying properties.

Usage

  • It can be used in skincare, hair care, sun care, and colour cosmetics.

Formulation Guide

Recommended Use Level: 1 – 5%

Use Instruction: Add to the oil phase and heat to 75°C

A combination of Glyceryl Stearate with fatty alcohols like Cetearyl or Cetyl Alcohol is used for the formulation of O/W emulsions.

It is usual to combine 2 parts of Glyceryl Stearate and 1 part of fatty alcohol.

We recommend the preparation of creams to heat the oil phase and water phase separately to approx. 65 °C and for lotions heat both phases separately to 80 °C.

We also recommend adding the hot oil phase
to the hot water phase while stirring and then the coarsely dispersed pre-emulsion is then homogenized.

If the water phase has to be added to the oil phase due to production-related conditions, the water phase must be added to the oil phase, to avoid the formation of a water-in-oil emulsion) and homogenisation has to be started afterwards.

During cooling, a constant horizontal and vertical
movement of the emulsion has to be ensured. The
viscosity of the liquid emulsion increases to a creamy consistency, as the hydrated consistency promoters solidify.
