INCI Name: Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate

CAS Number: 183476-82-6

Description

Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate is a very stable, oil-soluble Vitamin C ester but has no inherent capabilities as an antioxidant. It is essential that Vitamin C be released from Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate in human tissues or cells to obtain any antioxidant effect. Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate is truly a precursor of Vitamin C, the release of which reduces cell damage triggered by UVB and suppresses UV-induced melanogenesis through ROS scavenging. It is prudent to include an effective antioxidant in Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate formulations.

Benefits

  • Improved stability against heat and oxidation compared to Vitamin C
  • Easy to formulate due to lipophilicity
  • Reduces melanin synthesis by tyrosinase inhibition
  • Reduces UV-induced cell damage
  • Increases Collagen synthesis and reduces its degradation
  • Improved stability & performance when combined with Acetyl Zingerone

Applications

  • Corrects & prevents intrinsic & extrinsic ageing
  • Reduces UV-induced pigmentation, even toning

Formulation Guide
  • It should be used at 3 – 30% of the finished formulation.
  • It is miscible in a wide variety of the following:
  • Emollients such as capric/caprylic triglycerides, C12-15 alkyl benzoates, dicaprylyl ether or Vegetable oils such as sunflower oil, jojoba oils, olive oil
  • It must be added post-emulsion at 35C or below.
  • It can be added directly to the oil phase of cold-process formulas.
  • It can be formulated into colour cosmetic products as long as the pigments are coated.
  • The addition of Acetyl Zingerone and/or Bakuchiol makes the product more effective.
  • The finished product must be acidic, preferably having a pH below 6.5. The pH range of 3.5-5.5 is recommended.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or heat. Opaque and airless packaging is highly recommended for maintaining product integrity and stability over time.
